I think she finally realised she was way out of her depth, even as Governor of Alaska. Good looks and a few well practised cliches will only take you so far. But unless there is some intellectual depth to back it up, then you are eventually going to run out of steam, and be run over by another loco. She always struggled as McCain's running mate when she had to actually comment on matters that a V.P. should have some knowledge on. Good looks and a folksy manner just weren't going to cut it with the discerning voter. She may have got away with it for a while in Alaska, but her decline in the opinion polls showed that it wasn't going to be enough there either. In her resignation speech, she looked to me like she was a woman at the end of her tether. She looked like a vulnerable mother who had given birth to a child with Down's Syndrome, and whose daughter was a young single mother. She looked like a woman deserving of sympathy, not scorn.
And I think the exposure of her family problems just ate away at her self esteem. That, and the trust she placed in her fundamentalist faith. It just wasn't turning out the way that the pastors said it would. They were exposed for the charlatans that they truly are, although she may not yet realise this.
I think she just wants to go back to the simple world she understands. I wish her well.if she does. I may not have agreed with her politics, but she is, after all, just another mother struggling to get by in this confusing world we live in.
And only the hardest heart would blame her for that.

I think Sarah has just gotten started...
And I don't think we've heard the last of her. I think she's either quitting pre-emptively before some now-unknown scandal breaks involving her or that she's planning some other sort of political move
She also has a long track record of quitting her endeavors and has shown she has the attention span of a hummingbird.
But I think she's pretty well committed political suicide by this move.
Your compassion for her is admirable.
It will be interesting to see if this is the case. I'm just going on her performance in her resignation speech. That was not the speech of someone in control of themselves. And it came out of nowhere. I think she's had enough, but ego may triumph over common sense once she's been away for a while, and she may try again. For America's sake, and her own, I hope not.
I hope so.
It's laughable that she stood on the "you can't trust Washington types" as if she was going to be responsive to the Voters wishes.
She might still be aiming for the top job but if she gets Republican support it will show an extreme lack of depth in their ranks.
Thank you.
You may well be right. She'd be a psychoanalyst's nightmare, so my humble efforts would seem to be rather futile. We shall see.
And I agree with you. ;o)
If that is the case, then my newly found compassion will rapidly evaporate.
She may still resonate with the rednecks, but I think the big end of town will be looking for someone more tuned to middle America. Good luck with that too. Like you, I haven't seen any genuine Republican contenders.
That is true.
You're alright, Snowy. Pleased to meet you.
The more I look at it, the more I think she is guided by emotion, and not reason. She'll implode long before she gets to be president. I think it's happening now.
So, sue me Sarah...
Thanks, GOF. I stood for parliament once, and was active in politics for a number of years. One thing I learnt, and that is that while we may differ with someone's politics, exercising their rights in our democracy doesn't diminish them as a human being . Too often we forget that in this chaotic world in which we live.
You'll get no argument from me there. But that is the point I am trying to make. Stupidity is not blameworthy, and I believe she is stupid, and therefore shouldn't be blamed for it. By all means, do all we can to keep her out of politics where she could do untold damage in a position of real power such as POTUS, Dubya being a fine example.
But no matter what her political and/or religious beliefs, I can only empathise with the mother of a teenage single mother and also a Down's Syndrome child.
However, I have a feeling that if she actually makes it out of the limelight, she will miss it....it must be addicting. I am hoping we won't be seeing more of her, but I'm afraid that's too much to hope!
Seriously, though, if she runs again for any office and actually gets elected I would say the electorate would deserve what they got.
